Heavyweight Champion in the World Extreme Cagefighting
organization.
Born on December 8, 1986 in Los Angeles, California, Cantwell
fought for World Extreme Cagefighting, debuting in WEC 26 in 2007. In the first fight, he was defeated
by Brian Stann via TKO early in round one.
A few months later, Cantwell turned the tables and this time
he won early in round one by TKO in a bout against Justin
McElfresh.
His next match was on March 26, 2008 at WEC 29 where he went
up against Tim McKenzie. He won via submission by rear naked
choke hold.
August 2, 2008 Cantwell rematched with Stann at WEC 35 for the
Light Heavyweight Championship title. In the second round
Cantwell won by TKO, earning him the championship. Shortly after
the fight, the WEC dropped the Light Heavyweight division making
Cantwell the final WEC Light Heavyweight title holder.
That same year, Cantwell joined the UFC. His first fight was at UFC: Fight for the Troops
on December 10, 2008 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He faced
off with newcomer Razak Al-Hassan. Four minutes and four seconds
into the fight he won by technical submission via armbar after
breaking Razak's arm. He won Submission of the Night as well
as the fight itself. He was quoted as saying, "I've been
waiting so long to do that, you have no idea." Later he
apologized for the remark.
At UFC 97, he went up against Brazilian Luiz Cane who
defeated him via unanious decision.
His next bout was yet another rematch with Brian Stann at UFC
Fight Night 19 on April 18, 2009 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Five
minutes into the third round he lost by unanimous decision.
When Cantwell pulled out of a bout with Vladimir Matyushenko
set for UFC 108: Evans v. Silva for undisclosed medical reasons, UFC president
Dana White said Cantwell might never fight again.
Since then, Cantwell was supposed to fight Ricardo Romero at
UFC 116 and Stanislav Nedkov at UFC 120 but neither took
place.
Cantwell fought Cyrille Diabate on March 3, 2011 at UFC Live:
Sanchez vs. Kampmann but lost by unanimous decision.
